Special Education
Related Professional Development
As I
complete my Special Education student teaching, I have not had the opportunity
to attend any large conferences or workshops related specifically to my current
placement. However, I have attended
school-wide staff meetings and Special Education support staff meetings on a
weekly basis. I have also participated
in Student Intervention Team (SIT) and Montana Behavioral Initiative (MBI)
meetings, Evaluation Report (ER) and Individualized Education Program (IEP)
meetings, and transition meetings for students attending middle school next
year.
All of
these gatherings have led to a greater understanding of how the Special
Education system works in the state of Montana, and has broadened my knowledge
of the intricacies involved in supporting a child with special needs. The ongoing communication and support between
and among the special education and classroom teachers, administration, school
psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and behavioral specialists is a delicate
balance of schedules and personalities, and is a clear example of the
dedication needed to successfully do this job.
In
addition to the school-facilitated meetings, I have continually challenged
myself to grow professionally by reading texts such as Modifying Schoolwork, by Rachel Janney and Martha E. Snell, and The First Days of School, by Harry and
Rosemary Wong. I have also taken
advantage of the Montana Office of Public Education’s resources, and downloaded
the following documents: Child Find, Referral and Evaluation Plan and The
Child Study Team packets.
I
realize that professional development and continual learning are an integral
part of being an educator, and I fully embrace that facet of the job.
The best contribution one can make to humanity is to improve oneself. ~Frank Herbert
