I spent two years as the tutor coordinator for America Reads America Counts (ARAC). In this position, I placed qualified college students as tutors in local elementary classrooms. Through this experience, I was able to see the value in volunteering from the perspective of the recipient, as well as from the volunteer. I was constantly amazed at the number of people who wanted to give a little of themselves in order to assist someone else. This university community has a wealth of service-minded people, and I was fortunate to be a part of it.
One of my favorite activities during my time at ARAC was coordinating the annual Dr. Seuss Day celebration in collaboration with the Missoula Public Library. This event reached over 100 local elementary students of varying socioeconomic statuses and modeled the importance of literacy.
This blog will document my voyage into student teaching, and serve as my Professional Development Portfolio for the University of Montana Teacher Education Program. It will also serve as a place for potential administrators to view my past experiences.
